Cameron Foundation announces first fellow

The Cameron Foundation, a philanthropic leader in the Tri-Cities region, today announced the selection of its first-ever fellow. Jerry Kuthy has been chosen following a national search to fill the newly created position at the Foundation. Kuthy is originally from Prince George County. He volunteered overseas as well as worked elsewhere in the United States before returning home to the Tri-Cities in 2010. He most recently served as Director of Programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Richmond, Tri-Cities and Norfolk before being chosen for this position.

Kuthy begins his two-year term at the Foundation on June 17. The Fellowship program is a new capacity-building strategy of the Foundation designed to strengthen the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors by developing the next generation of leaders.

“Jerry brings an impressive combination of work experiences, educational credentials and skills to the work we do at the Foundation,” noted Foundation President J. Todd Graham. In describing the role of the fellow, Graham added, “This fellowship provides a way to introduce new perspectives to our work. While bringing fresh ideas to the Foundation, in exchange, the candidate is being given the opportunity to work inside a private grantmaking organization that has an important role in transforming the area into a healthy, vibrant, and economically vital region. We think Jerry will be a great complement to our current professional staff and we are looking forward to having him join us.”

Kuthy has an extensive background in education, having begun as a middle school teacher in a low-income community in Chicago. Motivated to make an impact on a larger scale, he has worked in public schools and for nonprofits addressing issues of homelessness, educational inequality, mentoring and civic engagement. Kuthy’s professional career has included seven years in a leadership position at the Inner-City Teaching Corps, a Chicago-based organization focused on transforming education in underserved communities. His educational credentials include a BA in history from UVA, a MA in teaching from VCU, a MA in pastoral studies from Loyola University Chicago, as well as a recent MBA from the College of William & Mary. “I see The Cameron Foundation Fellowship as the perfect way to merge my passion for social transformation, nonprofit experience and business school training in service to my home community,” Kuthy said enthusiastically. “The Tri-Cities is home and I love it.”
