Addressing Core Needs for Hopewell Youth and Families
Southside Transformation Opportunities for Residents and Youth (STORY)’s signature after-school program, ML2, began as a pilot program of Hopewell Redevelopment and Housing Authority in 2014. STORY has since grown into its own 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to provide access and exposure to programs and services that will renew minds and restore hope for low-income individuals and families. ML2 focuses on tutoring and mentoring for math, literacy and leadership. Located in a Hopewell public housing community that saw a 50% increase in crimes between 2014-2016, ML2 gives children of Thomas Rolfe Court a safe place to do their homework in the community center. Through a partnership with FeedMore, participants also receive meals and snacks. The program, which has expanded to run through the summer, is offered to the 146 youth in grades K-8 who reside there. STORY has had over 40 of these children register for ML2 through 2017.
