Cameron Foundation announces October awards, new member to committee, and updated funding priorities

PETERSBURG, VA — The Cameron Foundation’s Board has decided on its last round of competitive grants for 2012. In its October meeting, the Board approved recommendations for 16 organizations to receive a total of $1,095,900 in grant awards. The Foundation’s two other funding programs for technical assistance and basic human needs remain open on a year-round basis so that organizations can apply for those purposes at any time.

In this meeting, the Foundation’s Board also approved the addition of Carolyn A. Thompson as a new community representative to its grants committee. Chaired by Director Cleveland A. Wright, other Directors of the grants committee include Larry C. Tucker (ex-officio), Pam Martin Comstock, Chequila H. Fields, J. Tolleison Morriss, VI, Ann C. Taylor, and James L. Thacker, Jr. Dr. Marion H. Wilkins of Waverly serves as the other community representative.

In preparing for its 2013 grantmaking, the Foundation’s Board revisited its priorities and determined to reestablish grantmaking in the Cultural Enrichment program area. Funding in this category had been suspended for 2012. Additionally, the Foundation will continue to award grants across its six other fields: health, human services, community and economic development, education, civic affairs, and conservation and historic preservation.

The Foundation presented its October grant awards as part of its annual ceremony on October 24. During his remarks at the event, Board Chair Larry C. Tucker reiterated two of the core values that influenced this grantmaking and that shape the Foundation’s work more broadly. He explained, “One, the Foundation will continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of our community, and two, it’s important for this institution to stay true to its mission of providing resources that improve both the health and quality of life for residents of the Tri-Cities area.”
