Cameron Foundation awards over $1 million in grants
The board of trustees of The Cameron Foundation is pleased to announce that the Foundation has awarded $1,169,380 in grants to 22 local organizations. This is the Foundation’s first round of grantmaking in 2006, with two additional cycles of awards this year in June and October. Cleve Wright, president of the board of trustees, said, “We are now into our second year of grant awards, and it has been a privilege to support these worthwhile organizations and projects that are making a difference in the communities that we serve.”
The Cameron Foundation was established in April 2003 from the proceeds of the sale of Southside Regional Medical Center by the Hospital Authority of the City of Petersburg. The Foundation is dedicated to providing resources that will improve both the health and quality of life for people living in the Tri-Cities and surrounding communities.
Grants are prioritized in the areas of health care, human services, civic affairs, community and economic development, education, conservation and historic preservation, and cultural enrichment. The Foundation is committed to making strategic investments in the growth and survival of nonprofit organizations in its service region and has designed its grantmaking to facilitate capacity building and organizational development for nonprofits. The Cameron Foundation seeks to foster communication, cooperation, and coordination among service providers, build programs and services that are sustainable, and encourage strong and engaged board, staff and volunteer leadership.
Larry Tucker, chairman of the Foundation’s grants committee, noted, “This was another diverse and well-rounded group of grantees, with all seven program areas represented. While a majority of the organizations were previous grantees, nine were organizations new to our foundation, and we look forward to seeing the impact of their work in our community.”
